Market Money... & Artist Interview with Ellie Smith

As you may know, each Auckland Art & Craft Fair we invite an artist, designer or illustrator to create our special 'market money'. For this Fair we asked Auckland based illustrator, Ellie Smith to do us the honors.

A sneak peak of our market money....

Artist Interview with Ellie Smith...

Introduce yourself briefly to the readers of the blogMy name is Ellie Smith and (with the help of many talented contributors) I put together Extra Curricular – a magazine about people who get creative with their spare time.

What can people expect to see from you on the day?
Extra Curricular magazines, new and old – and (fingers crossed) a new print, if it works out! The latest edition is the New Beginnings issue and also the 11th, so it was time for a bit of a redesign to keep it fresh. We spoke to lots of inspiring people like Julia Atkinson and Pia Jane Bijkerk and we were lucky enough to get Angela Keoghan to illustrate the cover. It's my favourite one yet.

Tell us about your workspaceI've taken over half of the front lounge in our Grey Lynn flat. I love my work space – it's nice and light and looks out to people walking by.

What do you love most about living in New Zealand?
I love being close to the beaches and outdoors – there are lots of really cool spots to explore and they're easy to get to. New Zealand has a more relaxed feel to it than some bigger places; people are pretty receptive to new things. There are some awesome makers and doers, and people who are keen to support them to grow a vibrant creative community.
What are your favourite places online?Lately I'm trying to spend less time online. I have collected too many blogs to list, so I've organised them all into Bloglovin' and I check them out from there (which I think is a time-saver!) I often disappear into the Pinterest abyss too.

Artist Interview: Reignbow

Hi! I'm Kylie Richardson, one half of the fab duo that organises the Auckland Art & Craft Fair!  I tend to personally wear a lot of black or neutral clothing so find myself most comfortable adding a pop of colour by means of accessories. My large cocktail style rings are by far my favourite pieces - see below. They really add that extra something to an outfit :)

What can people expect to see from you on the day? Reignbow consists of a collection of pretty jewellery and accessory items inspired by feminine tones and antique bronze finishings. The current collection has a lovely vintage feel with a combination of chain, flower cabochon's, pendants and charms. You'll find a larger selection of charm necklaces and more variety of colours for all my cabochon jewellery than at previous Fairs.

Do you have any future plans for your work, could you describe them? Like with most things in my life, I tend to have loose plans and they change regularly. Next year I am focusing on getting my jewellery online and creating more of an online presence for myself. I already do that by other means, but it would be nice to have my jewellery available all year round, rather than just at the Fair.

Where are your favourite places on-line? I am well and truly hooked on Pinterest. It's probably my favourite website in a long time. (You can follow my boards here) Of course I also love to peruse Etsy and Foxes.co.nz for my weekly dose of handmade and designer goodness. I hang out on Facebook and Twitter for day to day happenings of friends and twitter peeps, and some of my favourite blogs are Frankie, Auckland Street Style, Here Comes the Sun, Fancy and Made by Girl. There are loads more but I can't think of them all off the top of my head!

What do you enjoy doing when you aren't busy making your wares? I'm not very good at relaxing for too long, so always have an array of things on the go at any one time. When I'm not making my wares I can be found either keeping myself busy co-organising the Fair with Jess, redecorating my apartment, studying Interior Design, pinning away on Pinterest, coming up with new ideas for business ventures or writing to-do lists. I am particularly fond of to-do lists and like to keep mine pages long. It feels so rewarding crossing things off, but I am constantly adding to it so it's a never ending project. However in saying all of that, when I do manage to talk myself into some down time I enjoy reading non-fiction books, catching up with friends for a coffee or wine and listening to music.

Artist Interview: LornaLove

I'm Lorna and partnered with a nice expression named love, I started a brand called LornaLove.  It started as a blog where I spread and shared love in the form of creative ideas, tutorials and inspiration to it's readers.  Now I also design and produce eye candy for your home.  My products are statement pieces that I like to label 'brave and daring' : not your regular, safe home decor choices.

What can people expect to see from you on the day? Expect to be able to walk away with your very own piece or pieces of LornaLove! These include my lamps, cushions, artworks and mobiles.

Do you have any future plans for your work, could you describe them? My website, www.lornalove.co.nz, will soon have a store attached to it so you can make purchases online.  I have a visual diary FULL of ideas and designs to put into production, so you can expect to see many more LornaLove objects of desire in the near future.  I will also continue to spread my love via tutorials and ideas on my blog, to inspire and guide readers creativity.

Where are your favourite places on-line? www.minieco.co.uk  [pure crafty radness]
www.sprinklebakes.com  [art and baking combine]
www.getinmyhome.com  [ideas in home decor and interiors]
PINTEREST!  Wow, that is one almighty place for inspiration.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren't busy making your wares? By day I am a busy personal assistant to my toddler son, Raphael. By night I am busy being creative with my LornaLove hat on.
Right now I have been consumed with selling our house and hunting for a new home.  Viewing houses is rather fun for a creative person when you stand and visualize what you could do to an interior or exterior.
I am a passionate person who jumps from obsession to obsession.  A recent example includes running, which lead to running a marathon ten months after giving birth.
